New Favorites

I originally bought this little prairie dress for the store but I just can’t stand the thought of letting it go. Vintage from the 70’s is so easy to care for and easy to wear (not to mention more sturdy than older vintage), it really suits my country-livin’, animal-lovin’ lifestyle. I really love this dress in particular because light-weight cotton sundresses like this one are just too perfect for the hot Kansas summers. I guess there’s a reason they call them prairie dresses!

I paired the dress with some recently thrifted items that are quickly becoming my summer favorites. I love the wood grain pattern on this tooled leather bag and check out the heels on these 70’s sandals!

Fabulous Hand-Me-Down

My step-mother (who also happened to be my eight grade Spanish teacher more than a decade before she and my dad were married—small world, huh?) is a rather interesting woman. She grew up in a commune in California and is well versed in the creative art of sustainable living. In addition to her many other talents, she is a savvy thrift store shopper and an expert seamstress. This summer she has been cleaning out her closets and passing on some of her vintage finery to yours truly. This wonderful slip is of her very own design. She made it in the 70’s with 1940’s rayon and antique lace!

She wore it as a nightgown but I think it could be a wonderful slip for a sheer vintage dress or look equally appealing worn alone as a slip dress. I’ve already found the perfect vintage/antique Art Nouveau ring to pair it with. This little darling should arrive from EBay in the next couple of days:

One of my Favorites

I love being able to put on a dress that I haven’t worn in months and feel like I’m wearing something completely new! Over the weekend the weather was just perfect—not too cool and not too warm—so I was able to sport my favorite black day dress. It has lovely little lace trim, front pockets, and the most delicate gathering at the waist.   Oh yeah, and I got my hair cut too!

Dress: vintage (40’s/50’s), local vintage shop
Belt: vintage, thrifted
Shoes: great little woven oxfords from the 80’s, EBAy
Bag: vintage (70’s?), local vintage shop

1953 Sears Catalog

I bought my 4th vintage Sears catalog over the weekend and I’ve really enjoyed browsing through the the clothing section. I like this one’s quite a bit more than my ‘55 catalog (I don’t think I’ve posted pics of that one yet), the clothes in this earlier version still have a slightly 1940’s silhouette. The cover, however, is unbelievably 50’s, check it out…

I want a pair of these!

I want a pair of these too! Wish I could order them for 5.89!

Everyday Outfit

I know this is sort of a boring outfit but I really love this little gingham top with the wide tie in front. I also just thrifted these shoes and I love them! They’re canvas with mesh vamps—so comfy for summer. I wore this out on Sunday with my step-daughter (she’s 6 so she’s too young to be embarrassed by her mom’s scruffy destroyed jeans and thrift store shoes). We had lunch, went to the book store and then visited my dad and his giant, goofy lab. It was a lovely, easy day. Ooh! and my step-mother gave me THE most beautiful 40’s day dress ever! More on that later.

Top: Dillard’s clearance center, can’t remember the brand

Shorts: thrifted, had forever (if you couldn’t tell)

Shoes: thrifted, Salvation Army
